Frequently asked questions

The Omega-3 Index measures the percentage of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cells. This is a measure of the percentage of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA in all the cells of your body.

It is an important indicator of the health of your heart, eyes and brain.

By measuring your Omega-3 Index, you can improve your omega-3 levels individually with the help of a dosage recommendation.

  • No, this is not necessary if a general dosage is enough for you. Your dosage depends on your consumption of (oily) fish. You can determine it by answering a few questions in the product selector.
  • Yes, it is necessary if you want to know your precise dosage. In that case you need to know your Omega-3 index. With it, you can then determine your daily dosage in our tool.

No, it can vary greatly. A person's needs depend on several factors:

  1. How much oily fish do you eat?
  2. Do you have a healthy lifestyle?
  3. What is the rest of your diet like?
  4. How much do you weigh?
  5. Are you a man or a woman?

Yes. If you eat 1 herring per week, for example, you can subtract it. 1 herring contains 1500 mg DHA+EPA. If the tool calculates 1000 mg DHA+EPA per day, you can subtract 200 mg (because 1500/7 days = 200), which brings you to 800 mg DHA+EPA per day. You can offset all oily fish (SMASH*) this way. *salmon, mackerel, anchovy, sardine, herring.

It takes 4 months for your body to replace all cell membranes once. So it only makes sense to measure your new status after 4 months or a little later. It is important to lower your daily dosage after that period (max. 6 months). If you want to know it precisely, you can enter your new omega-3 index into the calculator again to see your new, lower daily dosage.

The inventors of this test are a German cardiologist (prof.) and an American scientist (dr.). In this scientific article they explain in detail that a single drop of blood is enough to measure your Omega-3 index.

In many other articles, they also explain that an Omega-3 index between 8 and 11 is optimal.
